Hi everyone, I have a big announcement to make. But it needs a short introduction first.
My Horror and Art Journey
It’s not a secret that I really love the horror genre. I love to watch horror films and series and I love to read horror books. As soon as I could read I devoured all fairytales, the scarier the better. But living in the Netherlands where the horror genre wasn’t so popular, still isn’t, I soon read all the scary books from the library there were to find. I still envy all those kids who grew up with the Goosebumps books or with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, for they didn’t get translated into Dutch.
But luckily the tv brought some much needed horror. Remember all those movies for kids that were pretty scary like Return to Oz, with the scary Mombi. Or The Never Ending Story with the Nothing, that was some dark stuff. But also the tv show Under the Mountain scared the hell out of me.
Besides horror I also loved to draw since I was a kid. Mostly animals for I love animals and think they are beautiful and special. And I loved art class at high school. I loved the genre Surrealism, because it is closely connected to the weird and the strange like horror can be too. I even did think about applying to art school, but I didn’t. I went to study psychology instead.
For a long time I lost both my love for horror and drawing. Not that I didn’t like it anymore, but we just got out of touch. Life and other things got in the way. But lately I found it again, both horror and making art.
I was watching, reading and writing about horror again. And I was also starting to draw and found new mediums to make art with. I always drew with pencil and colored pencils, but pen and alcohol markers and later on soft pastels really rekindled my love for art and just creating something in your mind and later on seeing it coming to life on paper is a wonderful feeling.
So why not combine both passions?
As an artist it is often hard to come up with subjects or objects to paint or draw. For me animals were always my subject of choice. No doubt about it. Because when your draw something or paint something you have to study it to really make it come to life. An animal has to really see you, they have to have that glimmer in their eyes.
But I find horror and surrealism are very satisfying as well. Like animals, horror is infinite and surrealism gives me the opportunity to create the impossible, the unreal, the weird.
With soft pastels I painted Nostalgic Surrealism, colorful and playful soft and cozy scenes that symbolize childhood and innocence. But I was also attracted to the darker side of this melancholic childhood and started to paint Dark Nostalgic Surrealism.
I also like to draw designs related to horror with pen and markers. I specialized in pointillism, making tiny little dots with pen to create depth and to shape an image. But the coloring of the markers can also give just that extra pop to a design.
And I really do like the variety. Working with soft pastels is quite different from working with pen and alcohol markers. Each has it’s own unique qualities and pro’s and con’s. So why choose. I do both.
