Come on a journey to adulthood while battling inner demons, ancient evils, supernatural threats and real life horrors.
A carefully selected list of horror books that turn nostalgia into a childhood full of nightmarish terrors.
Updated April 28, 2026.
Coming-of-age is a special horror genre because it is about kids and young adults who are growing up and must face some kind of horror. Whether that be an ancient evil, or possession, or demons, or cosmic horrors other supernatural or real life threats. Although it’s about kids and their personal and supernatural battles, some books are indeed written for young adults, but a lot of coming-of-age horrors are written for adults.
It allows us to relive our own childhood, maybe even process our personal traumas, and it offers a great feeling of nostalgia. In my personal opinion kids and young adults go through much more interesting phases than adults. Kids have a lot to explore, about themselves, others and the world. But they are still young enough to be open-minded to their imagination and believe in the impossible. The loss of innocence is a very important aspect of coming-of-age and that makes it both tragic and heroic.
This specific genre also has a lot of sub-genres. Maybe the most well known is the coming-of-age where a group of kids must battle an ancient evil, preferably in the summer when they can roam free and can explore and go on adventures. But there are a lot of other sub-genres that deal with just one kid or young adult, or a small group that doesn’t have that epic feel, but rather a very intimate vibe, where they deal with supernatural threats or real-life threats on a more personal level.
Coming-of-Age thus has very wide variety of topics and themes to choose from and there is something for everyone to enjoy.
I have put together a list of Coming-of-Age Horror Books that I have read and personally recommend. It’s not a list with all the coming-of-age horror books out there or the best ones, but this is a selection of books that I enjoyed reading.
The list is set up by decade and by year. Starting with the most recently published books. Each time I have found a new book within this genre that I highly recommend it will be added to the list.
So save this post for more recommendations.
The list consists of 12 books at the moment.

Wasps in the Ice Cream by Tim McGregor (2023)
(282 pages)
Genres: coming-of-age, gothic, psychological, eighties vibe
It’s the summer of 1987 when Mark meets George, the middle sister of the Farrow family who hate the villagers and the villagers equally hate them back because of the death of the oldest sister. Mark falls in love with George who’s a strange but strong girl, but their secret relationship does have consequences. It sets Mark’s other relationships with his two best friends, his father and stepmother on edge and this summer will change his life forever.
It’s a gothic coming-of-age tale about first love, forbidden love, fragile relationships, small-minded people, secrets and witchcraft. It very much feels like a story Shirley Jackson could have told. Very well written and with sharp and insightful observations and symbolism. Told by Mark it contains a lot of metaphors, a supernatural touch, a lot of eighties vibes, references to other horror films and books, a ghost in the attic and secrets that can no longer stay hidden, not even his own secret. A boy from school goes missing, and a rendering truck is following them, trying to kill them, the ghost of a dead soldier roams the cemetery and that’s just only the beginning. An ancient evil is about to destroy their town and the kids are the only ones who can stop it.
It’s a very nostalgic story about the sixties, where kids could just disappear for the day, just show up at dinner and no questions were asked. The boys all have different characters and the story is told from different perspectives which makes it interesting and you get to know them even better. There are some gruesome scenes but it is terrifying as well. You can Read the Full Review.

It by Stephen King (1986)
(1116 pages)
Genres: coming-of-age, supernatural, summer, eighties vibe, fifties vibe
This epic tale about good and evil might be the book of all books when it comes to the coming-of-age genre. An absolute classic and must-read. In the summer of 1958 7 kids must fight Pennywise the clown, who is responsible for a lot of missing kids. 27 Years later they have to return to Derry again for the final battle.
It’s about friendship, bravery, their traumas and the traumas of a whole town. It’s a complete and full story with great characterization of the kids and the town and has some very scary scenes, horrifying events and social themes, but also nostalgia and the feeling of being a kid again. Pennywise is an ancient evil that has many faces and is cause for absolute horror. The narrative switches between 1958 and 1985 as we learn what happened back then and now.
