Plot

Shawn Ruddy has a YouTube channel called “Wrath of Shawn” where he takes on all kind of dangerous challenges. However he has been cancelled after he has done a nasty stunt and now he wants to make amends and get his viewers back at the same time. So he has taken it upon himself to stay in a haunted house at Halloween. The house is called Death Manor and the ghost of a poet called Mildred Pratt, who was a wealthy woman and who hanged herself in the house, still haunts it.

He plans to do a live stream where all his followers have a say in what he has to do that night. The house is boarded up but he sneaks inside.

He hangs four cameras in four different rooms and he has a head cam and a normal camera to film everything that happens that night. He is ready to take on the night and whatever may come. Then a fan called Chris shows up totally unexpected and the viewers want her to stay. But things are not as they seem. As the night progresses the hauntings begin and Shawn is attacked which starts a night full of terror, chaos, ghosts, creepy figures and gore.

Short Review

To begin with, Shawn is not a likable character. He’s annoying and his face is too often too close in the lens of the camera. It’s a nice gimmick to make him even more obtrusive. He is a scaredy cat and a bit of a dork and he is selfish and self centered. He screams like a little girl which is very funny and he can’t even run properly. He’s also very stupid because when he arrives he throws away his car keys. He does an even dumber thing to hold a seance to provoke the ghost of Mildred. Ironically when Chrissy arrives he finds her annoying, while the viewers like her very much, even more than they like him.

It’s a very smart move to make him unlikable as he has been disgraced before this story starts. But as the night progresses, although he remains not a likable person, you get to feel sorry for him, and so do the viewers. They’re even trying to help him survive the night, giving him tips and information about the occult.

The first part of the film has some scary moments with an ominous vibe, but when it’s revealed what is truly happening the film turns into a fun and silly chaos full of ghostly attacks, gore and a Shawn who is going wild. The twist is a fun one and while the humor coming from Shawn and his actions and reactions is still prominently present, the film turns into a real fun horror with some disturbing scenes. And the story of Mildred truly comes to life in a haunting hunt. It’s also the turning point that the viewers start to root for him.

The found footage is very modern. With multiple cameras in the house and his own moving camera we can explore the house to the fullest and he can watch everything on his iPad and that gives control but also an even more terrifying feeling. We also get to see the comments on the livestream that tell Shawn what to do, which alters from the moment the hauntings are actually proving to be real. From just telling him to put himself in danger, they now point him to danger to avoid it and help him survive that night.

Deadstream is a chaotic positive mess that work really well, with a not too likable Shawn, good scares and a lot of silly fun.
