The mini series The Vampire Lestat or Interview with the Vampires season 3, is a brilliant powerful, raw, surreal hallucinatory, wild ride with Lestat as a force of nature behind the wheel.

The Vampire Lestat is depicted as a mini series but actually it’s the third season of Interview with the Vampire. It picks up the story after Daniel Molloy has concluded his interview with Louis and Armand with a shocking ending and Louis reuniting with Lestat. This season, as the name already implies is all about Lestat. And I sure did miss him last season but this season will totally make up for that. It stars Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, Delainey Hayles, Eric Bogosian, Assad Zaman. Created by Rolin Jones.
It consists of 7 episodes. (45-54 min)
Plot
After Louis and Daniel remember some traumatic events that happened in the seventies in San Francisco, and Daniel exposed Armand as a liar who took credit for saving Louis while in fact it was Lestat all along who saved him, Louis went to reunite with Lestat. Daniel however was turned into a vampire by Armand out of spite.
Louis and Lestat made up, but didn’t get back together again. Too much has happened. While Louis is still grieving and even has a trauma about Claudia’s death, Lestat is still pissed about the book, in which there are some untruths about him. So he decides to become a rockstar and hires Daniel to make a documentary about him. To tell his own actual true story.
His band members, Salamander, Alex, TC and Larry and his entourage Dee Pharma and his lawyer Christine Claire don’t know he’s a vampire. When they do find out they think it’s awesome, except for Alex who joins the AA, where he meets Armand. Armand even goes through the 12 steps and apologizes to Daniel and Lestat, but he has a dark ulterior motive.
So does Lestat with his band. He records songs with a deeper layer only ment for vampire ears and to start the conversion. The point where there are so many vampires, more people die than are being born, because now they are on the menu.
Meanwhile Louis sees a waitress that is the spitting image of Claudia. He visits Regina often and even offers her to play Claudia for payment, which she accepts.
Lestat tells his story for the documentary, while a mysterious woman Sofia has joined the tourbus. He takes us back when he was a young boy who stuttered and grew up in a wealthy but unloving family. He killed 8 wolves when he was still human and his mother Gabrielle tended to his wounds and even got incestuous with him. When he was in his thirties he left for Paris and met up with Nicky, who became the violist in his theater later and whom he had a relationship with, although it ended badly.
When Lestat was turned into a vampire by Magnus, Lestat also made Nicky a vampire, but he went mad. A dying Gabrielle followed him to Paris and he also turned her into a vampire. Which started a complex relationship. After she had left him, he buried himself in the earth for 80 years until vampire Marius pulled him out by orders of Akasha, the first vampire and queen who is now stone-like but alive. And Lestat has to take care of her now.
All of these events ultimately lead to a climax that will change the world forever.

Short Review
Well this was one hell of a ride. I loved every minute of it. Lestat is a force of nature and in combination with sex, drugs, rock and roll and blood, this results is a killer story. It’s a wild, highly overstimulating the senses, mess in the best way ever. It starts with the opening credits with the music and visuals that are very present and lively. It’s fun to see the series take it to the modern days which changes the whole dynamics and vibe of the series.
Where the first two seasons were a bit demure and pretentious or philosophical and poetic, this is the opposite. It’s wild and Lestat is the real deal, he’s raw, physical and what you or what he wants you to see, you’ll get. With a lot of insane music, which bares his soul, this series satisfies all the senses. The cinematography is awesome, fast, powerful, surreal, and compliments the narrative. The characters are much more explored. It’s sexy, it’s hot, seducing and fun.
Lestat shows every emotion there is. He’s fun, he plays tricks on Daniel during the interview, he is sensitive, he’s vulnerable, he is wild, he’s angry, he’s traumatized and lonely, and at the same time full of live. We learn a lot about him through his past. His relationship with his mother Gabrielle who later calls herself Sofia is very toxic. She is not a good mother and caused him some traumas. Their relationship of mother and son and lovers is more than toxic and disturbing. When Louis finds out he is disgusted, but Lestat’s reaction is very vulnerable and honest.
Louis, Armand, Claudia and Lestat are all damaged, dealing with trauma that they never addressed in a proper way after hundreds of years, and even deal with it in an immature way. Armand by playing the victim, trying to control everything which leads to a shocking act. We learn that he has done some terrible things to frame Louis and hurt him. Claudia’s ghost tells Louis and Lestat exactly what she thinks of them and it’s hurtful but honest and very understandable. Louis is dealing with his grief in a very toxic and harmful way.
Finally Lestat wants to bring on the conversion. But most of all he wants to be seen, he’s an extrovert, loving live, while stuffing away his real traumas. The final episode after Louis and Lestat got back together and then decapitated is a very powerful episode, that shows more about Lestat, his inner thoughts and his soul. It’s a brilliant hallucinatory, overstimulating episode. Where invasive music, long pretentious poetic philosophical sentences are spoken, and with tripping visuals are all blending together and you don’t know what to focus on anymore. It’s the apotheoses of this whole season.
Although this season lays bare all their traumas, it also has a lot of humor. Especially when Lestat feeds from a girl on drugs is a very fun sequence. It’s fast paced and the opposite of the first two seasons. A lot happens, a lot of information is shared and it takes us back to where it all began for Lestat in the past and learn more about that time from his perspective. We learn more about his time with Nicky, which was a very emotional bit, with Gabrielle and Akasha. But it also focuses on what is happening now.
Where in the first two seasons the present was only Daniel interviewing Louis and Armand, now we get to see all of them how they are now living their lives. Not from an unreliable narrator’s perspective, but as it is. That reveals more about Louis’ true character, who has learned more about himself during the interview than all those hundred years before. It also reveals more about Armand and his vindictive nature, his urge to destroy others. While Louis is self destructive.
Lestat is another kind of creature. He flees in hedonism, making himself larger than live. He has got the blood of Akasha in him and wants everybody to know, although he confesses to his band members it’s also a burden. The scene where he had drunk her blood and she his, is a very impressive, potent and powerful, wild scene where we get a glimpse of the Queen of the Damned. He is enigmatic, an unstoppable force of nature, wanting to be loved, both true love as the love of the crowd. This has brought on an apocalyptic world which we will learn more about in the fourth season Queen of the Damned.
The Vampire Lestat is a brilliant musical intermezzo. It’s an overwhelming season in all the right ways. It was such a blast to focus completely on Lestat, while the other characters were explored further as well. This was excellent high quality entertainment that I enjoyed very much.
