Let’s immerse ourselves into the lives of Scooby Gangs and supernatural beings with all their drama and horrors they have to face with this epic list.
Supernatural fantasy horror drama series have the same characteristics. A group of people, adults, teenagers, young adults that come in contact with the supernatural and have to deal with it together. Oftentimes one of them has special powers, like a witch, a vampire, a vampire slayer, a warrior princess. But sometimes they’re just ordinary people who have a supernatural adventure.
Often these series are rooted in the actual world where the supernatural is hidden, but is a main part of their lives. Sometimes it’s a fantasy that is set in a whole other world with other rules and beings. Or it can be a science fiction set in space, other worlds or universes.
But there’s always human drama underneath. Sometimes it can feel like a soapy drama, but it’s always about the characters, their problems, growth, beliefs, love lives and just human affairs that ground the series how supernatural or fantastical it might be, deeply into the world we all know, making it relatable. It’s escapism, but with metaphors and symbolism.
I have put together a list of Supernatural Fantasy TV Series that I have watched and personally recommend. It’s not a list with all the supernatural fantasy tv series out there or the best ones, but this is a selection of tv series that I enjoyed watching.
The list is set up by decade and by year. Starting with the most recent tv series. Each time I have found a new tv series within this genre that I highly recommend it will be added to the list.
So save this post for more recommendations.
The list consists of 45 tv series at the moment.

Short Review
It is set in the same universe as the It Chapter One (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) films. It has added a new military plot that knows about the alien creature and wants to control its powers to control people through fear. There’s a new loser’s club that finds out about Pennywise in the most gruesome way. The horror is violent and brutal. It also ties the plot of the film in the eighties together at the end. In a great way it expands the universe of It, with new characters, while it also reveals more about the history and background of Pennywise, the actual man, and his daughter. Who worked at the carnival 27 prior to the events. It’s entertaining with a great group of kids, an expanding mythology and very scary scenes that look amazing and are wonderfully made. Talamasca: The Secret Order (2025) 1 season, cancelled
Stars: Nicholas Denton, Celine Bcukens, William Fichtner, Elizabeth McGovern. Created by John Lee Hancock. (6 episodes, 51-60 min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, vampires
Plot
This is the third series set in the universe of Anne Rice, but not a direct adaptation of a book, but rather a spin-off of the previous two series, Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire. It tells the story of Guy Anatole who gets offered a job by a secret organization called Talamasca. This organization tracks supernatural beings without interfering but just monitoring and recording everything. They used to have a library of all this information spanning over hundreds of years, but the library is destroyed and now they are looking for the artifact 752. Guy becomes a secret agent to monitor the vampire Jasper who infiltrated the London Motherhouse also looking for 752. It contains all the knowledge of the library. Meanwhile Guy befriends a mysterious woman Doris who hides a secret.
Short Review
It’s a story that is set behind the scenes of the other two series. The Talamasca operates in secret and this series expands the universe of Anne Rice. It has a new fresh take on this universe, forming a connection between the different supernatural beings by having all the knowledge about them. While it only has six explodes to set up a new part of this universe it feels like only a small piece of the veil is lifted. Although it ends with a cliffhanger and a set up to the next part of the storyline, the series was sadly cancelled.

Goosebumps (2023-2025) 2 seasons
Stars: Zack Morris, Isa Briones, Miles McKenna, Ana Yi Puig, Will Price., Justin Long It was created by Rob Letterman, Nicholas Stoller. (10 episodes, 36-47min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, magic
Plot
In the first season five teenagers have to deal with cursed objects from a haunted house. It brings them together just as it did their parents 30 years ago, who hide a terrible secret. They find out it all has something to do with a teenager who died and a very creepy ventriloquist dummy, Slappy. In the second season a father does experiments in the basement which get contaminated with an alien substance. Together with new friends the kids have to take on this problem. Both stories have a mystery from the past and their parents that affects the present. The teenagers and adults have to work together to face the supernatural and alien threats.
Short Review
This new series is based on the older Goosebumps tv-series and the book series by R.L. Stine. Although those were aimed at a middle-grade age, these new stories are for young adults, with fitting themes and problems and applied to these days and thus more modern. The series is also an anthology series, but now each season is one story instead of each episode. Both seasons connect different familiar stories and objects that are woven into the big story arc. This way it pulls the eighties and nineties series into the present. It is also is connected to the past, which is cleverly done and adds to a nostalgic vibe. It’s a fun series, with mild scares and good storylines. You can Read my Full Review of season 1.

Mayfair Witches (2023- ) 2 seasons, running
Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Tonaal Chirisa, Jack Huston. Created by Michelle Ashford, Esta Spalding. (16 episodes, 40-60 min)
Genres: fantasy, supernatural, witches, magic
Plot
It is based on the book series Lives of the Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice and is set in the same universe as Interview with the Vampire. Dr. Rowan Fielding is a gifted neurosurgeon who was adopted. She wants to find out more about her biological mother and goes in search for her in new Orleans. There she finds out that she comes from a long line of witches, the Mayfair Witches, who are bonded with a supernatural being Lasher. Now Rowan is the heir to be fully bound to Lasher giving her great powers and to fulfill a prophecy. In the second season, Lasher is reborn as innocent being who Rowan needs to protect even if she has to fight her own family line who remained in England.
Short Review
The story is centered around Rowan. She’s not only very smart, but a strong independent woman. It’s a feminist series with strong powerful women and a group of men who find that idea threatening and want to catch and kill a witch. It has a Southern Gothic feel due to set design and the setting itself and how the Mayfair Witches have their ancient rituals and magic and secrets. It also has some surreal dreamlike scenes and with flashbacks and visions we learn more about the history of the Mayfair Witches and their connection to Lasher. The second season is mostly set in England which gives off different vibes of a family clan, secrets and a far more patriarchal system.

While they all have special skills, Luffy ate a Devil Fruit when he was young and that gives him the superpower of being made of rubber, which comes in handy, while other Pirates have other special powers from eating it.
Short Review
It’s a very playful series with an epic storyline, great characters and a very imaginative and original world. It is based on a graphic novel and it often feels very cartoonish without becoming too silly. It’s just fun and Luffy is an amazing hero who is brave, loyal and helps those who are in need. This part of the story plays a pivotal part in how the Straw Hats navigate the world and their adventures and encounters. It has great fight scenes, a wonderful world and set design, great costumes and the characters are also being fleshed out becoming real humans with the full spectrum of emotions. It’s an epic series that looks fantastic and is an emotional rollercoaster. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2.

The second season Louis and Claudia travel through Europe and have to face the consequence for what they have done. The third season focuses on Lestat becoming a pop star.
Short Review
The series is based on the book series by Anne Rice. It’s a slow burn story that is told with intrigue. It’s sexy and contains a lot of psychological drama while it addresses being gay, being a black man in 1910, being a black girl, racism, sexism, friendship, loyalty, betrayal and intrigue. All the characters are complex and interesting and so are their relationships with each other. The second season the tone shifts and focuses more on Claudia and on Louis and Armand. The third season is completely centered around Lestat as a rockstar and is a brilliant, funny, sensual and rollercaoaster of a season. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2, Season 3.

Kristen must navigate all this new information while she has to raise her four girls, while her husband is often away for work and has to deal with her mother Sheryl who is lured to the dark side.
Short Review
With a monster-of-the-week format this series has a new case to offer each episode, while the main story arc, with villain Leland continues and every season gets more dangerous and complicated. The series has a very fun and playful vibe, with absurd scenes with demons, strange events, with surreal vibes and the chaotic mess at Kristen’s house with four girls. Meanwhile they each struggle with themselves, this makes them all vulnerable and susceptible to evil and adds more spice to the story and what’s at stake. It’s a great entertaining and fun series with an original, unique and authentic atmosphere and story.

I’m Not Okay With This (2020) 1 season, cancelled
Stars: Sophia Lillis, Sofia Bryant, Wyatt Oleff, Aiden Wojtak-Hissong, Kathleen Rose Perkins. Created by Jonathan Entwistle and Christy Hall. (7 episodes, 19-28 min)
Genres: supernatural, coming-of-age
Plot
Syd is a 17-year-old girl who doesn’t have it easy after her father died. While her mother isn’t very much supportive she has to take care of her younger brother. She has sex for the first time with her boyfriend and has all the normal teenage struggles. When she develops strange powers things are getting more complicated.
Short Review
This series only has a few episodes which are rather short to tell a complete story. Still it manages to give a good look inside Syd’s life, with all the normal struggles and her supernatural struggles. It’s a coming-of-age about identity, sexuality, anxieties, grief. The supernatural elements are both real and could be used in as symbolic way. It has a good set up and sometimes reminds of “Carrie” but remains its own story with its own vibe, with more playfulness. It has a great bloody ending, but also a massive cliffhanger. It’s a shame this series was cancelled because it had great potential as in storytelling, cinematography and music score and interesting characters. You can Read my Full Review.

Locke & Key (2020-2022) 3 seasons, finished

Each door has a different effect when you go through it. First they have a lot of fun with it, but when Bode finds a woman in a well who wants the keys all for herself, things take a dangerous turn. They find out more about the keys, the house and their own legacy.
Short Review
It is based on the graphic novel by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. It has a great original premise with a lot of entertaining keys and doors, while on the background there’s much more to it. It also has to do with their father’s death and his past. They not only unlock the doors, but also their own history and the mythology behind it all. It mixes horror with humor and a playful atmosphere, while it also addresses grief, trauma, family, friendship, secrets and finding your own identity. The siblings and their friends have to fight Dodge, the demonic entity who is after the keys and with a special reason. Each season has a new threat, with the final season it comes Apocalyptic proportions, in which Dodge plays a pivotal part. It offers great entertainment that mixes fantasy with horror, which can be scary but keeps it rather horror light and focuses on the siblings and their friends and their fantastical but dangerous adventures. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1.

Paranormal (2020) 1 season, cancelled
Stars: Ahmed Amin, Razane Jammal, Reem Abd El Kader, Samma Ibrahim, Aya Samaha, Rushdi Al Shami. Created by Amr Salama. (6 episodes, 45-55 min)

There the story of Refaat’s ghost girl Shiraz and first love is told and that ushers in a series of paranormal occurrences that he can’t deny and must face to protect his family and friends. This sets him and Maggie on several great paranormal adventures.
Short Review
This is a very fun Egyptian horror series that each episode shows another creature or being from Egyptian mythology and folklore. Refaat encounters all sorts of monsters, demons, beings and ghosts each episode while it also has a bigger story arc. It has humor, it’s fun, full of action and creepiness and Refaat is the antihero of the story, a sceptic and cynic who is forced to believe which results in some fun scenes. It is not only a journey into this mythology but also a personal journey of Refaat himself. It’s entertaining with a full range of emotions and an Indiana Jones-like adventure. You can Read my Full Review.

They also get help from Pardal’s younger brother Léo, who investigates the folklore about what is happening now.
Short Review
While it is set in the Japanese district it tells a Japanese ghost story. But it also addresses social issues like colonialism, slavery and racism. Together with the folklore, the history of that district is creates a supernatural tale that has depth as well. It takes place in one night and one day, making it a rollercoaster of events and they find themselves in the most bizarre situations. It’s a fun entertaining series from Brazil for young adults. You can Read my Full Review.

The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance (2019) 1 season, cancelled

The Skeksis have a special magical Crystal that gives them power. When three young Gelflings Rian, Deet and Brea find out the truth they set on a mission to free the people and their land. It is set before the film The Dark Crystal (1982). Now we get to see what happened that led to a horrific event and eventually the defeat of the Skeksis.
Short Review
While the outcome is already known, this series is not be expected to end happily. However it’s still an epic quest that shows more of the world of Thra and the seven different kinds of Gelfling clans. This results in an amazingly beautiful created world and creatures. The puppets come to life due to brilliant puppeteering but also the way they are crafted is just amazing. The series has more time to flesh out the characters and the mythology of that world and the Skekis and Mystics. The storytelling is wonderful, it’s adventurous, it’s fun, with a lot of humor and full of wonders, but it’s also harsh and tragic. Although the final battle was already set, it would have been very nice to learn more about this world and its mythology. The three Gelflings and their friends could have had much more exciting adventures if it wasn’t cancelled. It truly is an original and unique story that looks amazing and made with such love and care and craftsmanship. You can Read my Full Review.

The Order (2019-2020) 2 seasons, cancelled
Stars: Jake Manley, Sarah Grey, Adam DiMarco, Devery Jacobs, Thomas Elms. Created by Dennis Heaton, Shelley Eriksen. (10 episodes, 45-51 min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, werewolves, magic, monster-of-the-week
Plot
Jack Morton is admitted to Belgrave University. He wants to take revenge on his father who he deems responsible for his mother’s suicide. He thinks the secret society The Order has something to do with it and wants to join. When he finds out that The Order is a magical order of witches and that a werewolf roams the campus killing people, he is in over his head. Especially when he himself gets bitten and is now becoming a werewolf himself. And witches and werewolves are rivaling factions.
Short Review
The series starts out a bit bland, but the further the story goes and Jack is fully integrated in the pack of the werewolves called The Knights of Saint Christopher, the story becomes more fun. There’s room for romance and of course Jack falls for Alyssa who is a member of The Order. It has a fun mythology that plays out on campus and is an urban fantasy where more creatures appear than just werewolves and witches. The story arc evolves around stopping the evil plans of Edward Coventry, Jack’s father. In the second season things pick up even more. With more fun, tongue-in-cheek humor, whimsical humor and even self-aware humor, the second season also has more at stake when new enemies surface like a demon and a new mysterious organization. It has a fresh narrative and has found it own voice. It’s an entertaining series with likable heroes, but sadly it was cancelled. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2.

The Witcher (2019- ) 4 seasons, running
Stars: Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Charlotra, Joey Batey. Created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. (32 episodes, 47-67 min)
Genres: fantasy, supernatural, monsters & creatures, witches

Meanwhile a girl Yennefer is trained to be a sorceress and Gerald’s true love. Geralt also has a best friend the bard Jaskier. They form an alliance to protect Ciri and prevent her Elder blood to be used for evil. While the world is in turmoil and kingdoms fight each other they must navigate this world full of human monsters, and other kind of creatures and monsters.
Short Review
The series is based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski. While the first season we follow Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer on their separate journeys, it also has a monster-of-the-week format where Geralt faces another creature each episode. When they finally come together the narrative changes into a big story arc involving the bond between Geralt and Ciri and her training and between Geralt and Yennifer. Also a big part of the story is the political games that are being played by the kingdoms who all want power. It’s a story about friendship, love and choosing your own family. But it also has a bigger story about power, abuse of power, magic, portals, and monsters. It’s an entertaining series with humor, especially in the first season, with lots of nudity and sexiness, great choreographed fights and a continuous storyline. You can Read my Full Review Season 1.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020) 3 seasons, finished
Stars: Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Michell Gomez, Miranda Otto. Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. (36 episodes, 49-63 min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, witches, demons, monsters & creatures, feminism, girl power
Plot
Sabrina Spellman is a half witch who lives with her aunties Hilda and Zelda and her cousin Ambrose in a mansion which is also a funeral home. At her sixteenth birthday she must choose either The Path of Night, becoming a real witch within the Church of Night or become a mere human. While she struggles to choose between her friends Roz, Harvey and Susie or the path of witches, dark forces are gathering to fight against her. After she has chosen to be a witch new problems arise, and a sinister plot long set in motion reveals itself.
Short Review
This series is build with very strong and powerful women. It has a special unique cinematography that enhances the dark witchy atmosphere, but also gives it a unique identity. The characters also have unique personalities of their own. The Church of Night is a very patriarchal institute, where the women are subdued. But Sabrina doesn’t want to be subjugated and is a real feminist. The story revolves around these choices and themes, but there’s also a lot of room for romance, friendship, real life problems and fun. And of course for the supernatural happenings, like raising the dead, limbo, dark rituals, cannibalism, astral projections, spells, exorcism, Gryla, Lilith, Lucifer himself and much more. It also has a lot of horror film references which are very fun to spot. While it has a monster-of-the-week vibe it focuses more on the whole story arc of the whole series. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2, Season 3.

On their mission they also uncover a sinister plan by the Church of Conclave to end the world by bringing back the old demons.
Short Review
This Mexican series contains a lot of Mexican mythology and culture which opens up a whole new supernatural world full of demons and witchcraft and results in an original and captivating story. The characters are all very outspoken, likable and a very diverse motley crew of people. The relationships are complex but also playful and are cause for lots of fun scenes, situations and interactions. It keeps the balance right between campy fun and serious events. It’s not too bloody or gory and focused more on the fantasy part mixed with the supernatural. The second season focuses even more on the Aztec mythology, has even more hilarious absurd situations while it also focuses more on the serious part of the characters. It’s a very fun, original series with female empowerment, and Aztec mythology. Sadly this series was cancelled before the story was concluded leaving us with a cliffhanger and a longing for more adventures of Elvis, Keta and Nancy. You can Read my Full Review of Season1, Season 2.

A Discovery of Witches (2018-2022) 3 seasons, finished

In the third season when Diana has grown into her full powers, together with other vampires, witches and demons they want to rewrite the rules and defeat the old ways of the Congregation.
Short Review
It’s a magical journey about identity, love, loyalty, family, secrets and fight the old narrow-minded power. While it mainly focuses on Diana becoming a full witch, it’s also about her love for Matthew and becomes part of his family, while she also discovers more about her own family. It has a grown up vibe with adult problems, that often are political and is about changing the ancient rules that are racist and old fashioned. A lot happens in Diana’s personal life as she has to adapt to this new uncovered world she is a part of. It’s a supernatural romance with forbidden love and freeing the supernatural world of its chains.

Legacies (2018-2022) 4 seasons, finished
Stars: Danielle Roe Russell, Aria Shahghasemi, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Kaneshiro. Created by Jill Plec. (68 episodes, 42 min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, vampires, werewolves, witches, monsters & creatures, monster-of-the-week
Plot
This is a spin off of The Originals which in its turn is a spin off of The Vampires Diaries. The story evolves around Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Hayley Marshall, a werewolf and Klaus Mikaeslon an Original Vampire. This makes Hope a born tribrid, a witch, vampire and werewolf in one and a very powerful supernatural being. The story starts when she goes to the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted run by Alaric Saltzman. She and her friends have to deal with all kinds of supernatural threats and Hope has to protect her friends and her love Landon. All this power has a cost for her friends and for her. Each season offers a new big evil they have to fight.
Short Review
It has a monster-of-the-week structure. Hope has to navigate the responsibilities that come with such great power. The style is more lighthearted and playful and with a lot more comedy than The Originals which was rather serious. The supernatural beings vary from fun to scary and everything in between. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain serious issues and problems she has to deal with. The mythology of this series is filled with all kinds of supernatural beings like dragons, gargoyles and much more. This is due to the Malivore Pit which releases supernatural beings and forms a big plot of the series. It’s a great supernatural series with strong female characters, great monsters and creatures, playful storytelling which results in an epic ending.

Lost in Space (2018- 2021) 3 seasons, finished

While they try to find their way back they face a lot of danger. They are helped by Don West a smuggler and hindered by Dr. Smith who has plans of her own.
Short Review
It’s a very fun and entertaining series that is playful and lighthearted with the Robinson as the center. They are a loving family full of thrilling adventures people and the family dynamics add a lot to the story. They are all very smart and each have different special skills which solves problems when they work together and even saves lives. Although the Robot isn’t a living person it very much feels that way. The more he interacts with Will the more human he gets. But he’s not alone. There are more of his kind who are not this benevolent. It’s a series about friendship, family, courage, love, second chances, taking responsibility, redemption and sacrifice. It’s a well rounded series that although it’s playful it offers a lot of themes weaved into the narrative. It looks amazing with all the new planets and the design of the Robot is wonderfully made. This series is based on the 1965 series but brought into the now. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2.

Now he is in the middle of a strange fight, as he discovers his true identity. Meanwhile his wife Laura has risen from the grave due to a magical coin and befriends a giant leprechaun Mad Sweeney and protects Shadow unseen.
Short Review
It’s not only an amazing series with beautiful cinematography, great characters but it’s also very interesting to learn more about the ancient mythology and the idea that we now worship new kinds of gods. The story is based on the book by Neil Gaiman. All the different mythologies from different cultures brought to America by immigrants is a very great concept and they play with it a lot, while also creating a thrilling story full of mystery, intrigue and surrealism and fantastic music accompanying the imaginative scenes. It has a very bombastic, authentic, sexy and daring style that also has some comical scenes and situations. In the second season there’s more focus on Laura and Mad Sweeney who are very intriguing characters. The third season tells us more about the role of Shadow in the big war to come. However before the full story had come to a satisfying end, it was cancelled.

Creeped out (2017-2019) 2 seasons
Created by Bede Blake and Robert Butler. (23 episodes, 25 min)
Genres: supernatural, fantasy, YA, middle grade, anthology
Plot
This anthology series with scary stories is made for children and offers a lot of different kind of stories. Be careful what you wish for. Monsters, online bullying, social media, a time portal, identity, camping, an alien, an imaginary friend, pranking, a circus, are all themes and storylines that mix scary stories with cautionary tales. It has social themes that especially address kids and young adults in these modern times. Some stories are fun, others rather scary and some are more focused on a cautionary tale. This mix work very well and there’s a favorite story for everyone. The second season has stories that deal with anger issues, lice, dependency of AI, a creepy hotel, video games, selfies, a new baby, sports competition, a slumber party and Santa Claus.
Short Review
My favorite stories of the first season are Kindlesticks, Shed No Fear, A Boy called Red and Side Show. These stories all bring something fresh and original with great mystery and a twist. It’s a mix of fantasy, the supernatural and science fiction and horror and even humor which results in a wide variety of stories. My favorite episodes of the second season are Tilly Bone, Splinta Claws, The Many Places and Only Child. While this is a great scary anthology series for kids, it’s also very nice for adults. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2.

Soon after he arrives a woman is found dead and that’s the start of more trouble and Manfred was send there for a reason.
Short Review
The series is based on the book s by Charlaine Harris. The series revolves around the Midnighters. Every episode we get to know one of them better, while the big story arc continues. All of them have a past and their own problems that led them to Midnight where they all can live a peaceful life. There’s a vampire, a hit-woman, a fallen angel, a half demon and more. They were drawn to Midnight because of the Veil, a place where hell can open up to unleash a demon horde. But evil supernatural beings are drawn to it too. It has the typical urban fantasy style of Charlaine Harris that combines human problems and struggles with supernatural problems and struggles, where the characters are a central part of the story. It is a fun entertaining, cosy meets horror series, with a likable and original group of characters. Sadly it was cancelled after the second season.

While Mr. Norrell and Jonathan began as friends they are now rivals, and The Gentleman keeps getting stronger. They have to work together to stop the plan of The Gentleman.
Short Review
It’s an intriguing fairy tale with dark humor, based on the book by Susanna Clarke. While it focuses on the relationship between Norrell and Strange and how they do magic, Jonathan’s wife Arabella also plays an important role. As does Stephen Black the black servant of Lady Pole who is under the influence of The Gentleman who is an intriguing creature, not evil not good, but mostly selfish. The main story arc is about the prophecy of two magicians who would bring back English Magic. The magic is fantastical and looks amazing as do the settings of the 19th century and the fairy realm and the costumes. It’s a epic story about magic and some key players with a great lore. As the story progresses they spend more time in Fillory which becomes a pivotal part of the narrative while the characters keep evolving, growing and learning. Making new friends, fighting different enemies and villains.
Short Review
The characters are all very fleshed out and are active agents in the magical adventures they encounter. The series addresses serious adult themes like feminism, patriarchy, slavery, sex, queer identity, even rape, a sexual predator and more, which makes it an adult series. There’s also a lot of room for humor and playfulness, romance and friendship. The series is very inclusive searching for the grey areas instead of good or evil. Filliroy is beautiful magical place that is a very original designed world full of wonders, strange creatures and adventures. It uses horror tropes and fantasy tropes alike, like illusions, a haunted house, dragons, fairies, the Order of the Library, The Neitherlands and even Gods. It’s a very imaginative series with wonderful storylines that evolve over time. With witty, whimsical humor, a bit naughty, especially the interaction between Eliot and Margo are just brilliant. It’s an epic series with epic story arcs where a lot happens and takes you on a rollercoaster ride through all the emotions. Short Review
Each episode they have new adventures concerning an artifact, an artifact-of-the-week format, while each season has a big story arc with the big villain they have to defeat. The adventures are full of mystery and puzzles. It’s a very cosy feel good series, with emphasis on the playfulness and the fun adventures with quirky, likable characters that combines the supernatural with fantasy and science fiction and magic. They have to deal with fairytales, mythology, parallel universes, leylines, a haunted house. The build up of the season is well done, with each season more original villains, more at stake and the characters get more fleshed out, while the stories get more complex. It’s a very entertaining series with a playful tone and a fantastical atmosphere.

While they have to deal with vampires in the first season, the second season they have to deal with witches. The third season they have to face their own demons.
Short Review
The series looks amazing with great set and costume design but it all revolves around the characters. They each add a very important part to the story, with their own personal histories and their actions in the present. It has a theatrical, poetic style that is gorgeous and a visceral, yet carnal’s sensual and emotional tone. The characters are elusive and compelling and the further the story goes, the more epic it gets. Their stories are tragic and the horror is combined with social hefty themes, like depression, identity and more. The mythology of the story evolves and expands, while their personal stories do too. The Victorian era plays an important part and creates that gothic atmosphere. The way the gothic characters like vampires, witches, the monster of Frankenstein are integrated into a new story arc with adherence to the original stories, is very original and with a modern take. Each season it gets darker, due to a prophecy and the story becomes more and more focused on Vanessa who has the most tragic tale. It ends with catharsis, redemption and peace, but not before London is set into darkness. It’s a epic gothic tale that is truly mesmerizing. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2, Season 3.

The second season continues after they have found the supernatural killer and Roman and his cousin had a very special baby together. It revolve about kids being kidnapped. The third season introduces more characters, more storylines, while it works up to the finale.
Short Review
It’s a gothic horror series that revolves around the friendship of Peter and Roman while the mythology around their species evolves. Each season they have a new enemy to face and mystery to solve. It’s also about two families, family secrets, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, and it even throws science fiction in the mix. Roman’s little sister Shelly is a special girl who has her own story to tell, that is very poetic and along the way she gets an even more prominent role. Jonathan Pryce is the family’s scientist who creates wonderful and terrible things. This gives the series an original edge. But there’s also a lot of gore, brutal kills and bloody violence. Every season the story evolves and grows into a final climax, in which everyone plays his or her own part, that ends in an epic finale. You can Read my Full Review of Season 1, Season 2, Season 3.

It tells their family history from the past, with each season new characters, new friends and enemies, which sometimes shift and new problems.
Short Review
In comparison to The Vampire Diaries, this series focuses more on adult problems, political games, loyalty, betrayal, intrigue, family secrets and family rivalry and has a far more adult atmosphere and themes. The Mikealson family is a dysfunctional family where their father wants to kill them, their resurrected mother has her own plans and the siblings have wants of their own. All relationships are complicated and are also on edge. While Klaus was a villain in The Vampire Diaries, he is still a bad boy, but there’s much more nuance to it. He’s dangerous and unpredictable and his character is very flawed but makes him very interesting. The mythology of vampires and their family is fully explored and gets expanded each season keep things fresh and interesting.

Short Review
This series is all about the old fairytales from Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, Rumpelstilsken even Robin Hood and much more. The fairytales and the characters are all connected and that gives a new spin to the old fairytales while the basic story remains. It’s a fantasy soap with curses, spells, intrigues, secrets, friendship, love, betrayal, power and good versus evil. Every season introduces new characters and fairytales that are set in the present and in the past when all the fairytale characters still lived in another realm The Enchanted Forest before the curse was cast and they were transported to our world. Their stories are fully explored and the fairytale universe gets expanded more each season. And with each new character also new villains come along. It’s a very entertaining series full of adventures, fairytales, magic, romance, and epic heroic actions, mainly from the women, both good and evil. Short Review
It’s a fun and entertaining series that explores the lore and mythology of werewolves, but also of other creatures and cultures, like Keltic mythology, the Japanese Kitsune, the Aztec mythology and the Nordic mythology. It also uses different vibes in each season. From a conventional storyline, to a surreal narrative, steampunk, to a human villain. Each season has something fresh to offer, while expanding the universe of the series and adding new characters, new friends and new enemies, while the characters are more explored, grow and are changing. It’s also full of humor, romance, friendship, love, family, loyalty and betrayal. But there’s also a lot of room for horror, sometimes scary, sometimes surreal and weird. The core group of friends feels like a Scooby Gang which makes it very fun to watch. Each season has a big story arc, while the big story arc about Scott continuous. It’s a great entertaining series that has a lot to offer.

Each season has a big story arc, while the characters are central to the story. It has a soapy feel with all the teenage drama, the intrigue, the love affairs, mixed with all kinds of supernatural events and creatures. Each season the characters grow and evolve with the storylines. The town has a big history of the supernatural and the past and present are deeply intertwined. With flashbacks to Stefan’s and Damon’s past we learn more about them. Each season they encounter a new evil, from Katherine who wants to kill Elena, to the Original Vampires who come to town, rivalry between werewolves and vampires, the history of the Bennett witch family, and how this all connects to the present. This artifact-of-the-week set up offers each episode a new artifact with a new story and new adventures. All the artifacts have a story of their own and are very original as are the gadgets they use which Artie creates. This adds a lot of creativity and fun to the series. It has a playful vibe with a lot of humor and an adventurous nature. It starts out with just retrieving and securing artifacts but later on they must defend the Warehouse from people who want to steal them and even from supernatural beings. Each season contains a big story arc with each season the stakes are getting higher and the danger more dire, it even involves time travel and a dystopian future. With likable characters who have great chemistry together, and fun interactions, original and creative artifacts and fun original story arcs this is a very entertaining series that has a feel-good vibe which some darker things but mostly it keeps things light and playful.

The series is based in the books series by Charlaine Harris which are great romantic soapy vampire mystery novels. The first season centers around brutal murders, while it mainly centers around all the characters, their relationships, their interactions with the supernatural, love, friendship, intrigue and more. It’s an adult series that contains nudity, a lot of sex, it’s sexy, seductive and cruel and much more horror and bloody than the books. Each season has another big story arc, while the stories of the characters continue, grow and evolve into something else. It mainly focuses on Sookie’s love interests, from Bill to Eric and Alcide a werewolf and even Sam. It’s her quest to find out who she is, where she comes from and whom she truly loves.

When a new girl Maria moves across the street she finds out her secret and helps her fight aliens who have evil plans. As the series progresses the Bannerman Road Gang grows when Clyde, Rani, and a new alien child Sky join them. Each time they encounter new aliens and have new adventures.
Short Review
It’s a very cosy and entertaining series that is perfect for kids and adults. It has a monster-of-week format where they encounter known aliens from Doctor Who and new ones. With each episode a new story it also has a bigger story arc involving the characters. The adventures are not too scary but exciting and thrilling and original and very playful. The team with one adult and a couple of kids works very well and never feels awkward but very natural. They even meet the Doctor himself and other former companions. Some aliens are a bit scary, some are silly and others are very original and form a more dire threat. Unfortunately Elisabeth Sladen died too early but has made a great legacy starting from the seventies until the 2000s as the smart and brave and strong Sarah Jane who proved that a companion is much more than the Doctor’s sidekick.

The little town of Grandview hides a ghostly secret and a mythology of ghostly figures called Shinies and Shadows.
Short Review
Every episode has a new ghost that seeks closure and with its own story to tell. A ghost-of-the-week format. Meanwhile Melinda’s personal life plays a bigger part each season. The episodes do have some scary scenes, sometimes even frightening, but it always focuses on the drama behind it in the end. Every ghost has a tragic tale to tell, as the ones they left behind. It’s a good balance between drama and the supernatural. The storylines grow bigger into a bigger story arc the further the series goes and form a lore about Grandview and the supernatural. The characters are all likable and help Melinda forming a tight group of people dealing with the supernatural. It’s a cosy supernatural series with drama that is often very sentimental.

Each season has a big story arc in which the heroes play a big role. All of them have their own roles to play that come together. While we follow their normal lives, it focuses on their powers and how in affects their lives. Each character is important and each season new characters arise. And there are a lot of characters sometimes even too much to track. Not all storylines are coming together in a nice way, but the main characters always find each other and are the spill of the story. Short Review
While The Sarah Jane Adventures, another spin-off of Doctor Who, was even more aimed at kids, this spin-off is far more mature and is for adults, with mature themes and has a much darker tone than Doctor Who. The first two seasons have a monster-of-the-week format, while also building towards a bigger story arc. Each season gets a little bit darker, involving the characters, their background and what is happening now, while the story arc also gets more dark and grim. From the third season the monster-of-the-week format is completely abandoned and the last two seasons each have a big story arc. The third season is a more political focused science fiction thriller in which also the government is involved, that is very dark with impossible dilemmas. The fourth season is a global conspiracy thriller. These last two seasons have a very different tone and atmosphere compared to the first two seasons, although they are building up towards it. It therefore doesn’t completely feel like a cohesive series, but it still is interesting.

The companions don’t always survive, something can happen to them, or sometimes they just want to stop traveling. This results in many different characters along the ride, with each Doctor not only having a new body but his personality also alters, while his memories and core remain the same. It’s an interesting concept that can last forever.
Short Review
And it almost does. This is the new series that was rebooted. The first series first was broadcast in 1963 until 1989, with 695 episodes! Up until now we have had 15 Doctors. Because they all are different from each other he approaches things differently, keeping it interesting. He is quite a character, but the companions are very important too. The adventures also differ from each other, from fun and comical to dangerous or amazing, or tragic. Because the companions are bound to earth because of their relationships, the Doctor is also grounded even though he’s always on the run towards something or away from something. It’s their story arc that matters, but the Doctor’s mythology also expands.

But along the way they find out that they are part of a bigger plan, made by God himself. While they fight demons, they get help from other demon hunters, an Angel called Castiel and even a demon called Crowley and his witch mother Lorena.
Short Review
It starts out as a regular monster-of-the-week format, but each season there’s a bigger nemesis, a more epic story arc, while the lore and mythology surrounding the brothers expands and their characters are more explored and fleshed out. Each season the stakes are higher, the monsters and demons bigger and stronger until they have to take on God himself. The series has a lot of fun gimmicks that give it an authentic and fun touch that even is used as a meta-story sometimes. While the main villains are demons and angels and the biblical mythology, there are also a lot of other horror tropes like a haunted house, ghosts, but also new original monsters and of other cultures. It’s an epic series that is very entertaining, with likable characters, that grows from good versus evil and a very black and white perspective into a more grey area. From earth to hell, heaven, limbo and purgatory and even another timeline in an apocalyptic world, Sam and Dean are brothers in life and death. But their personal struggles, and issues with each other keeps it interesting. A brilliant, fun and all encompassing story of the supernatural. You can Read my Full Reviews of Season 1 and further.

Short Review
It’s a very intriguing slow burn with a supernatural mystical mythology. It has a poetic atmosphere and it’s about good versus evil represented by people. It’s about Ben and Justin’s destiny which remains unclear for quite some time. The storyline is intriguing as is the style that is sometimes surreal in the harsh times of Prohibition. The thirties were gloomy despondent years which make a powerful backdrop of an epic fight between light and dark. The series is full of symbolism of Christianity with an original spun. The lore is well crafted and cleverly put together with an ancient theme but executed in a very creative and authentic way. While this intelligent series looks gorgeous with powerful storytelling, great characterization and a strong mythology is was sadly cancelled although the battle between good and evil isn’t over.

They help all kinds of people, fighting all sorts of demons, or even helping them. Along the way they meet new allies, but also new enemies, especially the law firm Wolfram & Hart, which is the ultimate nemesis.
Short Review
This is a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with a much more grim and gloomy atmosphere and a more serious adult tone. It has a monster-of-the-week format, with a continuing story arc each season while it also continues throughout the whole series. That doesn’t mean the demons and quests aren’t fun. The further along the series comes, the more room for lightheartedness and fun demonic and vampiric problems. The mythology expands each season, with Cordelia getting visions, and even becomes a Power That Be. Angel has a son, who’s very special. They rescue a young woman named Fred from an alternate dimension who joins them and later assimilates with an Ancient One, a god. Old characters return, like Buffy, Faith, Darla and even Spike joins the team. It’s a great follow up after Buffy, with a more mature storyline without giving up the Buffy universe, but expanding it with more lore.

As they grow older and become more experienced witches, their powers grow and expand. They have to be witches but also try to lead normal lives, like fall in love, have a career and more.
Short Review
The story revolves around the lives of the three sisters, Prue, Piper, Phoebe and later Paige who is their half sister. Almost everything that happens to them is somehow connected to their witch lives as well. Their normal lives as women and their witching lives are heavily intertwined, which makes it a fun and supernatural but also very human. It has a demon-of-the-week format with each episode they have to deal with another demon to vanquish while each season also has a bigger story arc. It’s a very entertaining series that has dangerous demons, real life problems and very fun situations. This combination brings them in various situations, but it also addresses social themes especially relevant to issues women have to deal with and girl power. The interaction between the three sisters is very fun, loving, forgiving, while they help each other although they have some sisterly problems as well. But there’s drama as well, like heartbreak, death, grief and emotional storylines. It’s a fantastic mix that feels very natural and human in a supernatural world. She also meets a tall dark and handsome stranger Angel who is a vampire with a soul and helps her cause and serves as a romantic interest. Soon Buffy has to face all kinds of demons, vampires and monsters and even some Apocalypses.
Short Review
It has a monster-of-the-week format and each episode there’s a new evil they have to fight, while each season has a new boss that serves as the main story arc, from an evil mayor, a goddess, a Frankenstein-like creature, three nerds and more. The whole series also has a story arc that evolves around the fact that Buffy is the only one who can defeat evil, a great burden that always leads to an early death. But not this time. Buffy is smart, kick ass and most importantly she has true friends. There are a lot of young adult themes, especially the first three seasons which are set in high school. From the fourth season Buffy goes to college and her life and problems change as do the evils she has to face until she and the Scooby Gang must face the ultimate evil, The First. Although it has serious themes, the series is full with witty one-liners, snappy conversations, funny situations and a great final shot after each episode. The balance between the demonic threats, serious social issues, and humor is amazingly done. It has some very special episodes, that are either very funny, original or very grave that truly stand out. Their relationships between them and others are very important in the series and creates a great felling of being part of a special group. This is my all-time favorite tv series, which I love very much. And it has the best final episode ever. This is a true epic series.

Xena the Warrior Princess (1995- 2001) 6 seasons, finished
Stars: Lucy Lawless, Renee O’Connor. Created by John Schulian, Robert Tapert. (134 episodes, 45-48 min)
Genres: fantasy, mythology, monster-of-the-week
Plot
Xena is a former War Lord who wants to make amends and change her life. When she meets Gabrielle in a little village, Gabrielle wants to join her and become a bard. The two become best friends while they have all sorts of adventures relating to Greek Mythology and even Biblical Mythology. While their bond grows deep, they both change and evolve.
Short Review
The series is a spin-off of the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and became much more popular and grew a big fan base and reached a cult status. Partially due to the amazing relationship between Xena and Gabriele who were best friends and maybe even more, but also because of original and creative episodes, the fun cheesy humor and the meta-story episodes. It has a lot of recurring characters who bring either fun and playfulness to the story or make life harder for Xena and Gabriele. While the series progresses the storyline become more serious. It tells Xena’s story as a War Lord, her lost son and it even takes Gabrielle on a darker path. When they reach the Roman Empire era they are even crucified and die at the cross and go to purgatory where they have choice to make. Although it’s fun, cheesy, playful and silly on purpose, being self-aware, it does have a very deep narrative with heavy themes about choices, redemption, second chances. The further the story goes along the more the difference between good and evil fades and there is more room for a grey area. It explores not only these themes, and the main two characters in full, but also the Greek mythology with all its monsters, creatures and beings. It’s fun, full of girl power, entertaining, smart and with a very emotional ending.
