Plot
It’s 1993 and in Ceder Creek Village Halloween is a big deal. There’s the reenactment play, pumpkin carving and more. The town didn’t have it easy though. Two years ago a train wreck caused a chemical spill. Lots of people died, among them Kira’s parents. She is the director of the play and has to care for her little brother Trevor. Her boyfriend Cody is in the play, as are Shane and Maddie, and Barb works behind the scenes.
Meanwhile Clint, the son of a corn farmer finds a strange pumpkin in the field. He cuts it loose and takes it with him. After the play it’s time for the pumpkin carving contest. And the strange pumpkin is among one of the pumpkins about to be butchered. The pumpkin can’t let that happen, so she uses her vines to attack everyone. Kira, her whole cast and some others flee into a barn. They have to come up with a plan to make it out alive, before the Pumpkin kills them all and has her ultimate revenge.

Short Review
It’s a fun, silly, campy movie with a great group of characters that will surprise you and who you will root for. The movie knows exactly what it is and does it with glee. It’s here to entertain you at Halloween with a hilarious absurd plot that works really well due to the characters, the actors and the over the top plot. By making use of lighting, camera angles, and music that campy atmosphere that reminds of the bad B-movies is created, but this time it’s on purpose. It’s a Halloween slasher that is original, creative, self aware and funny. It has a fun nineties vibe reflected by the camera of the reporter which also shoots some horrific silly kills.
Kira is the main character who is overprotective towards her little brother who wants to be independent. He looks up to Cody. Maddie is quite the fun character who was supposedly cast as the dumb blonde, but actually is rather smart and she will surprise you at the end. Bill and Kevin are a closeted couple, but very endearing. They did come up with a motley crew of characters who are likable, even the coward. They really bring life to this movie. They have to work together to outsmart the Pumpkin who is really smart herself.
Now she is the one doing the butchering, using tools and exactly knows who carved up the other pumpkins, whose turn it is to be carved up according to her. She even has a personality shining through in between the kills and even her kills are drenched with personality and revenge. There are even camera views from her perspective, which is very fun and adds a creative dimension.
They come up with some creative and smart plans to escape the Pumpkin, which results in some funny but also thrilling scenes, because you really root for them to make it out alive. The ending feels very cathartic, when they let all the anger, loss and stress of being hunted loose and it’s very fun to watch.
The kills are very funny, gory and creative. As is the whole story. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither should you. This movie is certainly made with a lot of love for the genre and they certainly did have fun making it, so it appears. It is made for having a good time, with some lessons thrown in and very creative ways to stay out of the vines of the Pumpkin.
Carved is great silly B-movie entertainment with a good heart, a smart monstrous fruit, fun characters and a lot of gory humor.
