Prepare for a masked killer, screaming young people, a Final Girl in this wide variety of Slasher films with familiar tropes.
The Slasher genre might be one of the most well-known sub-genres of horror. When you talk about horror, most people will think of Slashers. The genre originated in the 1960s and 1970s. From the thriller horror Psycho (1960) to the gritty The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and the suspenseful Halloween (1978). The eighties were the golden age of Slashers (and of horror in general) and Slasher franchises were born.
The Slasher genre has very specific tropes. A human masked killed is mentally disturbed or traumatized and is looking for revenge and can even possess a supernatural resilience. His, because it’s almost always a man, victims are a group of young people who are hunted down and killed off one by one, with his weapon of choice. Only the virtuous Final Girl will survive and is often able to kill the Killer.
But nowadays the Slasher has evolved and after Scream (1996) is often used as a meta-slasher. But there are also subversive slashers like The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) even back in the eighties, slasher comedies, parodies, slashers with social commentary and meta-perspectives. They can be mixed with science fiction, with the supernatural, the occult and comedy.
While most Slashers focus on the gore, blood and brutal violence, they can also be very subtle focusing on suspense. They can be gritty and raw, or fun and absurd or even extreme.
Although it seems a very straightforward genre it’s actually very broad, with a wide variety of films.
I have put together a list of Slasher Horror Films that I have watched and personally recommend. It’s not a list with all the slasher films out there or the best ones, but this is a selection of films that I enjoyed watching.
The list is set up by decade and by year. Starting with the most recent films. Each time I have found a new film within this genre that I highly recommend it will be added to the list.
So save this post for more recommendations.
The list consists of 57 films at the moment.

A small group of criminals was hired to kidnap a little girl and keep her inside a mansion. But soon they find themselves locked in and the little girl isn’t what she seems to be. Now the tables are turned and a cute little ballerina vampire is out for blood.
While not a traditional slasher with a masked killer, this vampire has her own weapon, her fangs and her ability to control her victims after she has bitten them. This leads to a great comical slasher with over the top bloody gory kills, with fountains of blood splashing around. Abigail has a great surreal hunting style dancing her way around the mansion. But there’s a little twist. And one of the criminal turns out to be a Final Girl, with the help of Abigail.

Now she has to find out who the killer is and stop him, but things get complicated when she has to infiltrate her mother’s group of mean girl friends and the whole time travel aspect.
It’s a fun comical slasher with fun kills that are not focused on being too bloody or violent but on protecting the four girls, which is very hard due to the fact that they are mean and the generation difference. It results in plenty of eighties fun with stereotypes and nostalgia mixed together. You can Read my Unmask the Killer.

While Corey befriends Laurie and starts a relationship with Allyson the darkness overtakes him and together with Michael he starts a new killing spree taking revenge on all his nasty bullies. Eventually luring Michael back to Laurie.
It’s a drama slasher that takes on the topic how a town created its own boogeyman. From victim into a killer reflects the toxin Michael has spread through the town. While the story is focused on Corey and Allyson, Michael is now even more a metaphor for evil, with Laurie as its jailor and executioner. You can Read my Full Review.

After Riley has been raped and nobody believed her but her own sorority friends, things get even more sinister this Christmas. Cloaked men are hunting down girls at the campus. When Riley and her friends get attacked however, they fight back.
It’s a slasher with a supernatural twist. The focus isn’t on over the top gory kills although the cloaked men getting killed off are great and fun, but on social themes like misogyny, feminism and equality, which brings a meta take on the slasher genre. You can Read my Full Review.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

To stop the Baby Face Killer and to fix the machine that caused all of this she has to work together with Carter, Ryan and his science team. Again and again Tree has to die to unmask the killer and stop them.
Her death scenes are even more hilarious and original and she has to come up with bizarre stunts to die, to reset time. While less a slasher than the first film, it’s fun and original with likable characters and a feel good story.

Haunt (2019)

Genres: slasher, halloween
A group of friends find a haunted house tour in the middle of nowhere and soon find out they are the ones being haunted and hunted by masked crazed killers.
This is a very original slasher in a maze-like setting where Harper and her fiends must find their way out. The rooms are original claustrophobic and the masked killers are creepy. But what’s underneath their masks might be even more scarier. While the kills of her friends are gruesome the way Harper kills the killers is great fun. It aims at an atmosphere of tension and suspense rather than focusing on bloody kills, although they are gruesome. You can Read my Full Review.

Halloween (2018)
Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak. Directed by David Gordon Green. Written by John Carpenter, Debra Hill, Jeff Bradley. (1h 46m)
Genres: slasher, horror franchise, halloween
It’s been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived the attack of Michael Myers. Since then she has been preparing for his comeback, traumatizing her daughter and also teaching her and her granddaughter to be prepared. Now Michael has escaped again and is coming after her family. But she is waiting for him.
It’s a sequel to the 2018 film and has a lot of references to the film and the franchise connecting it in a meaningful way. It explores the aftermath of that massacre with profound observations and even debunks assumptions about the past. It’s a fresh start of the franchise but also feels very familiar with the same vibe, although with more gore and gruesome violent kills. It explores what it means to be a final girl and what Michael represents. It’s a smart slasher that transcends the genre and has some meaningful insights. With a great ending full of suspense the tables are turned and so are the roles of the final girls. You can Read my Full Review.

The film aims at combining the Halloween vibes with a cat and mouse game of a killer. You can Read my Full Review.

You Might be the Killer (2018)
Stars: Fran Kranz, Alyson Hannigan. Directed by Brett Simons. Written by Thomas P. Vitale. Brett Simmons, Covis Berzoyne. (1h 32m)
Genres: slasher, comedy, summer camp, satire, campy humor
A fun meta-slasher that with supernatural elements puts the genre upside down with gory fun kills and a cursed object. Summer camp counselors have to run for their lives, when a masked killer is out to get them. Meanwhile Sam thinks he’s the only one left and calls his best friend Chuck because she knows everything about slashers and to keep him alive. Unless he might be the killer.
It’s a very fun and original comedy slasher take on the summer camp slasher genre where a supernatural element stirs things up. The kills are gory and the primary weapon is a machete.

The Babysitter (2017)
Stars: Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving, Emily Alyn Lind, Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Andrew Bachelor. Directed by McG and written by Brian Duffield. (1h 25min)

Cole’s babysitter Bree is fun and a good friend until she and her cult want to sacrifice Cole. Now Cole has to fight for his live, but as the cult members are all incredibly stupid it might not be very hard to kill them.
The characters are hilarious and over the top stupid and a big nod to stereotypes. The kills are over the top campy and gory and bloody and will make you laugh out loud. This film mixes comedy with the occult and a slasher that completely gets out of hand. You can Read my Full Review.

Happy Death Day (2017)
Stars: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Rachel Matthews, Charles Aitken. Directed by Christopher Landon. Written by Scott Lobdell. (1h 36min)
Genres: comedy slasher, mystery, feel good
Tree finds herself trapped in a time-loop being chased by the Baby Face killer and gets killed over and over again. She must find out who the killer is and stop them before she is killed for a final time.
It’s a very funny slasher in Groundhog Day style where Tree gets killed over and over in original ways. Although the day gets repeated every time it never gets boring and it’s always a bit different due to Tree’s actions. It’s fun to guess who the killer is, which adds an original twist. It’s a comedy slasher with the focus on comedy.

Prevenge (2016)
Stars: Alice Lowe. Directed & written by Alice Lowe. (1h 28m)
Genres: revenge, slasher, comedy, art horror, halloween, absurd, British humor
The unborn baby of pregnant Ruth orders her to go on a random killing spree during Halloween. This results in a very absurd but original slasher. Ruth with her big belly isn’t exactly the typical masked killer.
The kills are ruthless, gory and fun and just too absurd. As is the talking unborn baby which we can hear as well. But there’s more to it. It’s absurd and fun but underneath lies a tragic tale that will be uncovered. You can Read my Full Review.

Genres: comedy, slasher, feel good, slapstick, eighties vibe
This over the top hilarious campy slapstick meta-slasher accidentally puts Max and her friends in her mother’s eighties slasher movie. Where the actors have become the roles they played, like it’s really happening.
It’s a great meta-slasher parody that uses their knowledge of slasher tropes and cliches to survive a machete wielding killer. It also parodies the eighties rules of a slasher that drinking, drugs and sex leads to a certain death. While it’s also a heartfelt story about Max who is still grieving the death of her scream queen mother and tries to connect with her character role.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Genres: horror, comedy, satire, monsters & creature’s
A meta-slasher satire where five friends are being attacked by a slasher family due to an ancient old ritual.
While it starts out a a typical slasher where friends in a secluded cabin in the woods are being attacked, there’s a big twist. Funny enough this twist only leads to more killings. It turns into a slasher fest full of monsters, creatures, ghosts and all sorts of killer creatures, that together cause a massive bloodbath with awesome kills. It’s over the top campy gory and bloody while it also remains fun and twisted. You can Read my Full Review.

Final Destination 5 (2011)
Stars: Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell. Directed by Steven Quale. Written by Eric Heisserer, Jeffrey Reddick. (1h 32min)
Genres: slasher, supernatural
When Sam and his colleagues go on a bus trip he gets a premonition of the bridge collapsing. He and a few others make it out alive, only to be chased by Death itself. This fifth installment has the longest and elaborate premonition scene. It’s actually a prequel to the first film that explains more about how Death can be cheated and it also connects this story with the first film, creating a big universe.
The deaths an kills are again original and some are very ironic. The deaths are also a bit more actively created by the characters instead of just happening to them. There are some great and gruesome and excruciating death scenes in this one, like the eye laser, but also very funny ones like at the massage table. You can Read my Ranking of the Deaths.

Scream 4 (2011)
Stars: David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere. Directed by: Wes Craven. Written by: Kevin Williamson. (1h 51min)

Now Sidney’s niece and her friends are the main targets. Sidney gets help from Gale and Dewey to unmask the killer.
With a new cast and the old cast this new part of the Scream universe also gets a new theme that is all about 15 minutes of fame. It has a lot of gruesome kills, a lot of likable characters are killed and it starts off with a lot of blood. It’s a meta-slasher and a satire and a real bloody slasher at the same time with violent graphic kills and a very sinister motive.

Dead Snow (2009)

Genres: zombies, slasher, splatter punk, comedy, winter
In this Norwegian slasher a couple of friends spend their vacation in the snowy mountains where they get attacked and killed off in over the top brutal bloody gory ways by zombie nazis.
The premise of this zomedy splatterpunk slasher is simple so that the kills are the main core of the film. It’s campy, it’s over the top, it funny and brutal and violent and the deaths are absolutely absurd outrageous.

The Final Destination (2009)

In this fourth installment Nick and his friends go the race track where he gets a premonition of a huge crash. Before they could be killed they make it out alive along with some others. Now Death has some catching up to do and comes after them one by one.
This part has some very original deaths and Nick gets a premonition of each of them before they happen and wants to prevent it, which sometimes even works out. The deaths are gruesome as always. Some are even more extreme, but this time there are very unlikable characters that are killed off. And as a bonus Nick has a second big premonition that adds a twist and surprise to the whole film. You can Read my Ranking of the Deaths.

This first film of the franchise has some original deaths that all seem very supernatural in nature and with a nice story about some friends and enemies who have to believe Alex to survive. They try to figure out how to break the chain when it skips someone. Although, does it? The kills take place in a bathroom, inside a house and in normal situations, which creates ultimate death traps of normal places. You can Read my Ranking of the Deaths. Stars: David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette, Patrick Dempsey, Jenny McCarthy, Parker Posey. Directed by Wes Craven. Written by Ehren Kruger. (1h 57min)

It’s three years after the first Woodsboro killings and Sydney is a recluse while the third movie of Stab is being filmed. Again a new Ghostface rises and has it out for the cast of Stab 3. Sydney, Gale and Dewey are asked to help find the killer.
This third meta-slasher sequel is its own parody with actors playing Sydney, Dewey and Gale, which causes much hilarious scenes. Although it still has some great kills not all of them are on screen and the focus is more on humor and the fun interactions between the characters than a bloody slasher. The killer has a motive that leads back to Sydney’s mother and connects the three films in a fun but tragic way. Of course it’s fun to guess who the killer is.

Halloween H20 (1998)
Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, LL Cool J. Directed by Steve Miller. Written by Robert Zappia, Matt Greenberg. (1h 26min)
Genres: slasher
Laurie Strode now has a son and still has nightmares. It’s 20 years after the killings and now Michael Myers is out for revenge. She has to face him once again.
This is the seventh film in the franchise and the third film with Laurie. While it’s not continuous with the previous films, it picks up the story after the first two films, which makes it a messy franchise. The story is a bit thin, and revolves around the cat and mouse game between Michael, Laurie and her son John, while his friends are the slasher victims. With predictable jump scares, this is the first film that continuous Laurie’s story, which will be rewritten in Halloween (2018).

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)

Stuck on a tropical island with a vicious killer that plays with Julie’s head, some quirky hotel employees and a couple of strong female characters, this sequel offers another mystery. While the kills are mostly off screen and the bodies found dead, it focuses on unmasking the killer and the mystery instead of gory kills. You can Read my Unmask the Killer.

Urban Legend (1998)
Stars: Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Tara Reid, Michael Rosenbaum, Loretta Devine, Joshua Jackson. Directed by Jamie Blanks. Written by Silvio Horta. (1h 40min)
Genres: slasher
At Pendleton University several murders are committed based on urban legends. We follow Natalie and all the murders take place among her group of friends. She has to try to find out who the killer clad in a parka is before they are all killed.
The fun part is that the kills are based on well-known urban legends. The kills are brutal and gory and if you don’t like animal cruelty there’s a scene you’d want to skip. I think that’s always an unnecessary cruel cliche that adds nothing. It’s a rather shallow teenslasher with stereotypes and cliches, but the concept of the urban legends deaths coming true can be fun.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Stars: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe, Freddie Prinze Jr. Directed by Jim Gillespie. Written by Kevin Williamson. (1h 41min)
Genres: slasher
After the celebration of the Fourth of July, Julie, Ray, Helen and Barry drive home and they accidentally hit someone. They decide to cover it up and throw the body into the sea. A year later they all find notes written I Know What You Did Last Summer or I Know on it. Someone knows what they did and now they are coming after them. Julie must find out who they killed and who wants revenge.
The kills are thrilling with a good chase and build up and are done in secrecy and in dark places. The fish hook is the weapon of choice that does some damage. But the focus is on Julie’s search for the truth. You can Read my Unmask the Killer.

Scream 2 (1997)
Stars: David Arguette, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O’Connell. Directed by Wes Craven. Written by Kevin Williamson. (2h)
Genres: slasher
After the Woodsboro killings Sydney goes the University to leave it all behind her. But a new Ghostface killer has found her and is out for revenge. With her old friends, Dewey and Gale and new ones she has to figure out who has It in for her now and why.
This sequel is focused on the meta-analysis of The Sequel. As Randy explains, a sequel has more kills and they’re more bloody and a beloved surviving character will be killed. It poses the question if horrors/slashers makes killers of people, and if sequels are always less than the original. It has some great thrilling scenes, they mess with Sydney’s head and it has a surprising killer.

Scream (1996)
Stars: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy. Directed by Wes Craven. Written by Kevin Williamson. (1h 51min)
Genre: slasher, meta-slasher
Sydney Prrecott lives in Woodsboro when she gets frightening and threatening phone calls. A killer with a mask, Ghostface has it out for her and her friends. A year earlier her mother was killed and her lover was accused. Reporter Gale Weathers believed he was innocent and wrote a book about him. Meanwhile Sydney and her friends have to survive a killing spree and is helped by deputy Dewey Riley.
It’s a great slasher, a satire and a meta-slasher all in one. With some great thrilling scenes, great death scenes, where all the victims are stabbed by a hunting knife, this is a classic slasher that offers horror and an analysis of the genre all the same time. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)
Stars: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon, Miko Hughes, Wes Craven. Directed & written by Wes Craven. (1h 52min)
Genre: slasher, fantasy, meta-slasher, surrealism
It’s been ten years since Heather Langenkamp played the role of Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street. A stalker still calls her and when she has strange dreams about that film and is asked to reprise her role and her son Dylan sings the creepy rhyme of Freddy, her nightmares might come true.
This is a very fun meta-story about the franchise. This meta-perspective offers great horror and a fresh authentic film. Even Wes Craven plays himself. Script, reality and dreams blend together, creating a real life Nightmare on Elm Street wth surreal fantasy horror that can be pretty scary. Instead of gory horror the focus lies on suspense, the mystery and the story. It bends the rules of a slasher showing slashers can be refreshing and original.

Puppet Master III: Toulon’s Revenge (1991)
Stars: Guy Rolfe, Sarah Douglas, Richard Lynch, Walter Gotell, Ian Abercrombie, Kristopher Logan, Aaron Eisenberg, Matthew Faison. Directed by David DeCoteau. Written by Charles Band, C. Courtney Joyner, David Schmoeller. (1h 26min)
Genres: slasher, creepy dolls, occult, supernatural
This third installment takes us back to when it all began in 1941 in Berlin where André Toulon performed with his puppet theater with a parody on Hitler. His wife Elsa is shot and he flees and puts her life essence into a puppet Leech Woman to kills the responsible nazis.
This whole background story shows the actual side of Toulon and his puppets and we get to know who these puppets really are and what they stand for. It’s a big contrast to the original film, although it was told the puppets are under control of an evil man who stole the puppets. The kills are fun and the 6 puppets are amazing as tragic. This isn’t just mere slasher but a good story with awesome killer dolls.

Genres: slasher, creepy doll, occult, supernatural
After they successfully destroyed Chucky, Andy’s mother is locked away in a mental hospital and Andy is put in foster care, where a girl Kyle also lives as a foster child. Andy is traumatized and Chucky isn’t dead at all and is coming after him. Together with Kyle who believes him, they must fight off Chucky while he goes on a killing spree to get to Andy.
The kills and mayhem are bigger and the final epic battle brings it to the next level. Kyle is like a bad ass sister and they form a great team which makes this film a very fun watch. The final battle is such a fun blast and offers great slasher entertainment.

Puppetmaster 2 (1990)
Stars: Elizabeth Maclellan, Collin Bernsen, Gregory Webb, Charlie Spradling, Steve Welles, Jeff Weston, Ivan R. Jado, Sage Allen, Nita Talbot. Directed by Dave Allen. Written by David Pabian. (1h 28min)
Genres: slasher, creepy dolls, occult, supernatural
A direct sequel to the first film where new paranormal scientists show up at the Bodega Bay to investigate the curious death of Megan. The five puppets have dug up the body of Toulon and gave him the elixir of life. But Toulon has changed and he now orders his puppets to kill and the scientists are about to be killed off one by one.
The scientist are slasher victims for the brutal kills and the original ways each puppets kills. Though not all puppets make it out alive either. Some fight back. The puppets get more focus and become real entities of their own and are actually quite tragic beings looking for a good master. This leads to some disputable actions and great campy slash fun.

Puppet Master (1989)
Stars: Paul Le Mat, William Hickey, Irene Miracle, Jimmie F. Skaggs, Robin Frates, Matt Roe, Kathryn O’Reilly, Mews Small.
directed David Schmoeller. Written by David Schmoeller, Kennth J. Hall. (1h 30min)
Genres: slasher, creepy dolls, occult, supernatural
In 1939 André Toulon a puppeteer hides from the nazis in the Bodega Bay Inn. He hides his puppets and he kills himself before they can get to him. 50 Years later in 1989 a couple of psychics are invited to the Inn by Neil Gallagher to find these puppets. But the puppets are alive and go on a killing spree. While not a traditional slasher, the puppets are weapons ruled by a human killer.
Blade, Tunneler, Leech Woman, Jester and Pinhead each have their own killing style. The kills are great and the puppets and their puppeteers are amazing. It’s a creative, original slasher with supernatural puppets. But this is just a small part of the story. They are not mere killer puppets and they have a whole background which the franchise will uncover. You can Read my Full Review.

Child’s Play (1988)
Stars: Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, Brad Dourif, Dinah Manoff. Directed by Tom Holland. Written by Don Mancini, John Lafia, Tom Holland. (1h 27min)
Genres: slasher, creepy doll, dark comedy
When serial killer Charles Lee Ray is chased by the police and shot he transfers his soul into a Good Guy doll using voodoo. This particular doll is bought by Andy’s mother who gives it to him for his birthday. Andy is delighted even more so when the doll seems alive. Until Chucky starts a killing spree and wants to transfer his soul into Andy.
It’s a fun eighties slasher with a campy style, brilliant ways how they made him come alive resulting in a very lifelike doll wielding a knife. Like the eighties it mixes fantasy, the occult with a slasher which offers a lot more than just a human killer stalking his victims. It’s a fun and original slasher with great kills and people who fight back that is a true classic. You can Read my Full Review.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Stars: Heather Langenkamp (Nancy), Patricia Arquette (Kristen), Robert Englund. Directed and written by Chuck Russell. Written by Chuck Russell, Wes Carven, Bruce Wagner and Frank Darabont. (1h 36min)
Genres: slasher, fantasy
When Kristen starts having terrible nightmares about Freddy she is sent to a psychiatric hospital where 6 other kids suffer from the same symptoms. Nancy Thompson is the only one who understands them and can help them. Together they have to take it up against Freddy before he gets them all in their dreams.
This third installment picks up the original story. It has a big fantasy and scary cartoonish vibe. Freddy is turned into all sorts of monstrous beings and transformations. Although there’s less blood, and few graphic kills, the slasher style is focused on the monstrosity of Freddy and his Dreamworld. Still there are some gruesome kills which makes this a good part of the franchise.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1987)
Stars: Mark Patton, Kim Myers, Robert Rusler, Clu Gulager, Hope Lange, Robert Englund. Directed by: Jack Sholder. Written by David Chaskin.
Genres: slasher, fantasy, symbolism
After Jesse has moved with his family he has strange dreams about Freddy. It turns out he moved into Nancy Thompson’s house and now Freddy wants to possess him to go on a killing spree again.
This time it’s not a Final Girl but a Final Boy who has to take it up with Freddy. This film is full of symbolism about being gay. However it’s the question in what way this symbolism is being used. Connected to this subtext is the body horror. There are less scenes in the Dreamworld and less brutal kills. It’s a totally different film that deviates from the franchise and the overall story arc of the other films. But it’s an interesting choice.

When Tina gets murdered, Rod is blamed but Nancy knows it has something to do with their dreams and Freddy Krueger who haunts them. They must stay awake and find a way to escape this nightmare.
This fantasy slasher is the first of a great franchise and kicks off with lots of blood, spurting like a fountain, creepy deaths scenes, a scary Dreamworld and a burned monstrous Freddy with his claw hand. It’s bloody, gory and gruesome mixed with fantasy and great original kill scenes. Nancy as the final girl is smart, inventive and brave. You can Read my Full Review.

Curtains (1983)
Stars: John Vernon, Samantha Eggar. Directed & written by Richard Ciupka Jr. (1h 29m)
Genres: slasher, winter
When Director Jonathan Stryker holds auditions at his mansion and invites a couple of young actresses, they are not only competing against each other but they are also being killed off one by one by a killer in an Old Hag mask.
It’s a very toxic story with a male abusing his power, women set against each other and without social commentary. It does have some great kill scenes. The one on the ice in particular and a creepy doll also plays a scary part.

The House on Sorority Row (1983)
Stars: Katherine McNeil, Eileen Davidson, Lois Kelso Hunt, Janis Ward, Robin Meloy, Harley Jane Kozak, Jodi Draigie, Ellen Dorsher, Michael Kuhn. Directed by Mark Rosman. Written by Mark Rosman, Bobby Fine. (1h 31min)
Genres: slasher, surrealism
Seven sorority friends want to celebrate their graduation. But their house mother wants them gone that weekend. They pull a prank on her and decide to stay. When their little quarrel gets out of hand the house mother is accidentally shot dead. When the girls try to cover it up with a party, someone knows what they did and is out for revenge.
The kills are short but sweet and take place during the party. They are not very impressive but the final part takes it to another level. With surreal imagery, the final girl is left to set things straight. The killer dressed in a creepy clown suit has an interesting background story that puts the whole film in another perspective. It’s a cult classic which a fresh take on the genre.

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Stars: Melissa Rose. Directed & written by Robert Hiltzik. (1h 24m)
Genres: summer camp, dysfunctional family, slasher, queer
Angela’s father and brother are killed in a boating accident and she has to go live with her aunt and cousin. During summer they are send to a summer camp and Angela doesn’t feel at home. She is bullied and worse and when a killer starts to go on a killing spree, things get more horrifying.
This slasher has a very controversial ending. It’s debatable if gender identity is being explored or exploited. It’s a slasher that is about bulling, belonging, identity and abuse. It has a unique killer that puts a different perspective on the killings.

Ghostkeeper (1982)
Stars: Riva Spier, Murray Ord, Sheri McFadden, Georgie Collins. Directed by Jim Makichuk. written by Jim Makichuk, Doug MacLeod.
Genres: slasher, folklore, monsters & creatures, winter
Jenny and her boyfriend Marty and their friend Christy are on vacation and driving around the snowy mountain on their snow mobiles, while their other friends stay at their cabins. When a blizzard hits, the three friends have to hold up in an Inn where only the innkeeper and her son live. And she’s hiding something in the basement.
The film focuses on the atmosphere of dread, the isolation and the relationship between the three friends. With few kills and not too gory, it’s more a supernatural mystery slasher that is based on the old folklore of the Wendigo. You can Read my Full Review.

The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Stars Michelle Michaels, Robin Stille, Jennifer Meyers, Gina Smika Hunter, Debra De Liso, Andree Honore. Directed by Amy Holden Jones. Written by Rita Mae Brown. (1h 16min)
Genres: slasher, social commentary, female empowerment
Trish and her friends have turned eighteen and are leaving for college soon. So for old times sake they have a last slumber party together. Meanwhile a serial killer has escaped and roams their neighborhood. And he has set his eyes on Trish and her friends.
This is a subversive slasher by instead letting the girls scream and get helplessly slaughtered they are empowered. And seen through the female gaze, this defies the slasher tropes. The women in this film don’t have the usual gender roles and they fight off the killer in a fun way. While it still remains rather cheesy and very eighties. While the girls are smart, brave and not at all helpless the boy screams like a little girl. They even degrade the killer by symbolically emasculate him. It’s a fun female empowering slasher that was rather rare in the eighties and quite modern. You can Read my Full Review.

Halloween II (1981)

Genres: slasher, halloween
After Dr. Loomis shot Michael and saved Laurie she’s in the hospital to recover. But Michael is not dead and follows her to the hospital, killing all the nurses that night before finally coming for Laurie. She has to fend him off once again.
This sequel takes place directly after the first film and tells more about why Michael is after Laurie. It gives him a motive instead of just randomly fixation on her. This sequel has more deaths, more gore and violence and feels more like a conventional slasher with nudity and blood than a suspense slasher. You can Read my Full Review.

Tourist Trap (1979)
Stars: Chuck Conners, Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness, Robin Sherwood, Tanya Roberts. Directed by David Schmoeller. Written by David Schmoeller, J. Larry Carroll (1h 30m)

While they wait for car service the house across the street hides a terrible secret. As the night falls, a killer roams the place and the friends aren’t save and soon will find out more about the horrors in that house and the museum.
It’s a fun slasher that takes an original turn with a creepy killer in different creepy masks. The mannequins and what they represent are very scary and the ending even has a surreal scene. With some graphic kill scenes, a sinister concept and a supernatural twist, this is an entertaining slasher. You can Read my Full Review.

Halloween (1978)
Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence. Directed by John Carpenter. Written by John Carpenter, Debra Hill. (1h 31m)
Genres: slasher, halloween
In 1963 a little boy killed his older sister. He has been locked up in an asylum ever since but now he has escaped and returns to Haddonfield where it all began. Now he has his eyes on Laurie Strode and her friends.
This classic slasher is based on suspense and thrilling original scenes and shots. It’s all about Michael stalking Laurie while she senses something. At Halloween when Laurie and her friend are babysitting he strikes with careful and quiet malice. It’s not too bloody and most kills are not prominent on screen. It’s all about his obsession with Laurie and the cat and mouse game. It’s all about cinematography and atmosphere which makes this classic a brilliant slasher. You can Read my Full Review.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Stars: Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Parrain, William Vail, Teri McMinn. Directed by Toby Hooper. Written by Toby Hooper, Kim Henkel. (1h 23m)
Genres: slasher, symbolism, art horror
When a group of friends run out of gas they unfortunately stopped near the house of Leatherface and his cannibalistic family. Now he has fresh meat to hunt down.
It’s a very raw and intense violent slasher that also has a great experimental style and also focuses on atmosphere. It sometimes even feels more like a documentary than a slasher film, due to the gritty raw style. Leatherface wears the faces of his victims and uses power tools to kill them like cattle. While it’s intense and violent it has not much bloody scenes, leaving much to the imagination. It’s also a social commentary on the meat industry and consumerism.

Theater of Blood (1973)
Stars: Vincent Price, Diana Rigg, Ian Hendry. Directed by: Douglas Hickox. Written by Anthony Greville-bell, Stanley Mann, John Kohn. (1h 44min)
Genres: revenge slasher, comedy, campy
Actor Edward Lionheart didn’t receive the award he felt entitled too and killed himself. Or so that was what everybody was to think. Now he is back to take his revenge on the jury and visits them one by one, playing the roles of his life to surprise and kill them.
With great different roles played by Vincent Price he disguises himself as a cook, a hairdresser and more. The kills are very original and creative and therefore quite absurd and comical. Although the kills are quite violent and macabre they rather feel theatrical full of drama and campy.

The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971)
Stars: Vincent Price, Joseph Cotton, Peter Jeffrey, Virginia North. Directed by: Robert Fuest. Written by: William Goldstein, James Whiton, Robert Fuest. (1h 34min)
Genres: comedy, revenge slasher, comedy, campy humor
Dr. Phibes died in a car crash while his wife died on the operating table. But he isn’t really dead and now he takes out his revenge on the doctors who didn’t save his wife. He gets help from Vulnavia who plays the violin while he kills them in very gruesome yet original and imaginative ways.
These kills are macabre but not gory or bloody, but rather campy and absurd. And based on the biblical plagues of Egypt. It falls into the same category as Theater of Blood. But the whole story feels even more bizarre with an animatronics orchestra, the theatrical atmosphere. His kill methods are with a freeze machine, bees, bats and even a horn of a unicorn.

Dementia 13 (1963)
Stars: William Campbell, Luana Anders, Bart Patton, Mary Mitchel, Patrick Magee, Eithne Dunne. Directed by: Francis Ford Coppola. Written by: Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Hill. (1h 20min)
Genres: slasher, gothic
This film is widely considered as a proto-slasher film with an axe-wielding killer who stalks a rich family and kills them one by one.Although quite different from the modern or gritty seventies and fantasy eighties slashers due to it’s gothic style. Meanwhile there are a lot of schemes going on. Louise is married to John the son of Lady Halogen who is rich and gives her money to charity after her daughter drowned in the lake. Louise is after the money and when John dies she pretends he is away on business, while she poses as the ghost of the daughter. But her plan fails when a killer romans the grounds.
The black-and-white shots create great contrast for a gothic atmosphere. With a suspenseful story to reveal the killer it has a little twist at the end.

Psycho (1960)

After a good conversation with him she decides to go home and return the money. But she’ll never get the chance. The Bates Motel hides a terrible secret.
This psychological horror thriller is built on suspense and an ominous foreboding atmosphere. The creepy looming gothic house, Norman and his mother create an atmosphere of dread and terror. The shower scene is famous and the psychological horror disturbing. Although not a real slasher is has the elements of a slasher that later would be used as a blueprint for the genre.
