Plot
In a little town just days before Halloween a little boy disappears. He is nowhere to be found. The only clue is a gingerbread cookie and a little shoe with blood on it. While the search leads nowhere people get agitated and want someone to blame. In the woods in a house atop of a hill lives an old woman. Everybody calls her a witch and thinks she has something to do with it. Sheriff Robert searches inside the house but can’t find anything.
So an angry mob takes justice into their own hands. Armed with Jack-o’-Lanterns they surround the house. Suddenly it’s on fire with the old woman inside. With no roads it’s impossible to put out the fire without firetrucks. When the firemen finally come on foot the fire is nearly out and a charred body is found inside the house. As she lies severely burned she curses all of them. Then her body crumbles to dust. Not much later the little boy comes back from the woods, he was taken by a coyote. The woman was innocent.
Three years later it’s almost Halloween again. Nine-year-old Tommy wants to got trick-or-treating and wants Robert to take him. Instead his sister 19-year-old Carmen will. However days before Halloween a little boy goes missing. All they can find is a shoe and a gingerbread cookie. Although the woman didn’t take the boy three years earlier, she might still be a witch. When more children are taken, strange symbols are left on the scene and Carmen and Tommy get attacked by stray cats while a dark hovering figure watches them, they start to believe that the curse of the witch is very much true.

Short Review
It’s a spooky Halloween story for young adults. The main characters are Carmen and Tommy. Tommy is a big fan of the Hardy Boys and wants to be a detective and adventurer too. So he is immediately intrigued by the missing kids and wants to help find them. Together they look for clues. They also get help from a mysterious man Peter, who has dealt with the witch before and they finally must take it up against the with herself.
It’s a spooky tale that reads like an adventure, just like the Hardy Boys. Although not everything feels logical, the two kids are likable and brave. They also have to deal with a mischievous boy and friend of Tommy, Brett (who honors his name) and his older sister Stacey who’s a bit of a bitch especially to Carmen.
While the witch kidnaps children and hides them somewhere, she uses stray cats, owls and bats to come after Carmen and Tommy. On top of that she has put a spell on the adults. During the day they seem apatic but at night they seem aggressive and it gets worse. They start fights, act strange, even Robert their dad isn’t himself. It distracts them from looking for their children, because they don’t care and have arguments and fights with each other. That way Carmen and Tommy are completely isolated and must find and free the children themselves and vanquish the witch.
The story feels a bit like a movie full of events and happenings and the mystery of the witch. It’s very mild on the horror, although there’s a scene with the janitor in the basement of the school that is gruesome. But the overall storyline is focused on a spooky atmosphere and thrilling and exciting scenes Carmen and Tommy are caught up in.
The Witch of Halloween House is an entertaining spooky story for teens that is a perfect read for Halloween to get into the spirit of Halloween.
